The Pleasant Unity extended aeration plant was originally constructed during 1979 to 1980; the original 0.500 MGD plant was designed by Westmoreland Engineers.  During 1996-1997 the Pleasant Unity WWTP was expanded to 0.950 MGD.  The expanded / upgraded facility was designed by Gibson-Thomas Engineers.  In 2007 the 14 Mile Run WWTP was completed which replaced an existing 0.200 MDG facility and provides sanitary sewage to 300 additional customers and eliminated 3 pump stations which conveyed approximately .150 MGD to the Pleasant Unity Treatment Plant.

The treatment plant, collection system, laboratory, and maintenance staff includes 8 full-time employees.  Billing is performed by 3 full-time Authority employees.

The principle (Pleasant Unity) treatment plant is staffed during normal business hours.  The new 14-Mile Run Plant and the 8 pumping stations are monitored and maintained on an established schedule.  The critical characteristics of all facilities are monitored by a SCADA System and assigned personnel are on call around the clock through an automatic paging system.

The liquid processes consist of influent flow measurement, screening, grit removal, anoxic zone for phosphorus and nitrate removal, nitrifying activated sludge, final clarification, and ultraviolet disinfection.

Bio-solids are wasted to aerobic digesters, dewatered by a belt filter press at the Pleasant Unity WWTP and a centrifuge at the 14 Mile Run WWTP and disposed at a local landfill.

UTMA sewer rates presently are $4.80 per thousand gallons.  The average customer pays approximately $40.00 per month for sewage service.  The plant also receives septage from several private haulers to facilitate disposal of on-lot septic systems within the surrounding townships.
